Equal Rights Beyond Borders
Start: June 2024
Equal Rights Beyond Borders is a German-Greek NGO that has been consistently campaigning for the rights of people seeking protection in Greece, Germany and at the EU’s external borders in Berlin, Athens, Chios and Kos since 2017. We have been active in this way for several years, particularly on the Aegean islands of Chios and Kos.
On Kos in particular, where the new camp is seen as a blueprint for the upcoming reform of the Common European Asylum System, there are hardly any local organizations – there are just four lawyers in total (50% of whom are provided by us) for the up to 4,000 people in the asylum procedure. It is therefore particularly important for us to work closely with all local stakeholders. We have built up an extensive cooperation network in Greece and the EU and work internationally.
A particular focus of our work is also the representation of FLINTA (women, lesbians, inter, trans, agender) refugees, many of whom have been and continue to be exposed to sexualized and gender-based violence (SGBV) during their flight.
Through its funding, the :do Foundation supports the project for individual legal representation of refugees on the islands of Kos and Chios.
